Orange RockCorps Festival is not your usual mainstream music festival - all attendees have to have volunteered at least four hours of their own time to a project beneficial to their local community; such as painting a school or library, cleaning up a part of town, renovating an allotment, etc. You can't buy or win tickets to this, you have to pull your weight. The festival itself takes place in the Royal Albert Hall on the 25th of September. Headliners to be announced...

My role is going to be as a Project Co-ordinator, helping set up and oversee the group opportunities organised for this kind of work and make sure they are efficient and a good time for all involved. This is a project I can totally get behind, and could only realistically be produced by an organisation with the kind of budget and standing that a major brand like Orange possesses. It is also great that a section of the youth populace who would never normally have reason nor the opportunity to visit the (amazing) Royal Albert Hall get the chance to do so, under very exceptional and personal circumstances - to see their music, and to know they have earned it.

To know that it has such positive accomplishments involved is what drew me to apply, and I am very happy to be involved with the festival.

I'll be working on this from August 3rd to September 25th.

EDIT: Oh yeah, the amount of people we're aiming to get involved over six weeks...?

Hide&Seek Festival

I'm going to see out July working with the Hide&Seek Pervasive Gaming Festival at London's Southbank.

They run a monthly night of original games called The Sandpit, which I will definitely have to start attending. Hide&Seek Festival takes the best of the games showcased in these (over 35) and creates a weekend of original entertainment. In their own words:

"Hello, we're Hide&Seek. We make social games and playful experiences. We founded the UK's first festival of pervasive games in London in 2007, and we've been working, thinking & playing together since then. We run the Sandpit, a thriving network of artists, game designers and players, and produce events with cultural venues around the UK. We work with brands, broadcasters and agencies to help them understand participation and community. And we design, build and run a lot of really cool stuff, at any scale."

On Thursday 16th July I'll be helping out and, apparently, performing as part of Matthew Lee Knowles' latest 'Happening' at Shoreditch Library.

From 6:30pm over 50 performers will take part in a 60 minute performance around the library. Sections will spin off in to allotted individual performances, whereas other sections will be 'en mass' actions.

It's all interactive too; audience members are free to join in and participate in performances that allow it.

All I know is I'll be on site to help with co-ordination. Not sure what I'm going to be performing yet...

Arcola Theatre, London / Create09

Throughout July I'm going to be interning in theatre production at the Arcola Theatre in Hackney, London during the Create 09 Festival and aiding with pre-production of their Winter season.

ITs Festival, Amsterdam

I'm returning to Holland on the 21st of June (straight after Cut & Splice) to work on marketing and publicity for The 20th International Theatre School Festival Amsterdam.

The festival will cover theatre, musical theatre, dance, directing and film, with a fringe programme of additional workshops and performances, late night events, after parties (every night!), award shows and more. The full line-up is here.

Suffice to say, I'm really happy to be doing this, as it will help me broaden my range of experience further into theatre and performance arts events.

Cut & Splice Festival, London

EXCLUSIVE DESIGN

I have set up an experimental project entitled EXCLUSIVE DESIGN.

The aim is to invite artists to work in a multidisciplinary approach, providing lateral solutions to problems with no obvious solutions.

It'll be interesting to see how this develops...

I have to say a huge thank you to all the people in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Brussels who let me flat sit, stay on couches, on air beds, in guest rooms and a squat for my unexpectedly long and much appreciated stay on the mainland, and for all these people again for showing me the cities and giving me an amazing experience.

I'll repay the favour one day soon enough...

decibel perform Shaking

On Wednesday March 25th, composer Ed Bennett's ensemble decibel will perform a new work of mine at the Birmingham Conservatoire.

Shaking is for ensemble of melodica/soprano, viola, piano, percussion and tape.

Soprano for the concert is the incredible Suzanna Purkis.

Concert starts 7:30pm, Recital Hall, Birmingham Conservatoire, Paradise Place, Birmingham.

Borealis Festival 2009, Norway

I will be assisting with production of the Borealis Festival in Bergen, Norway throughout March 2009.
